This file describes the other files in the 02issue02 directory. In the computer.column directory/folder at this site, I have now placed a cumulative index of all the Computer Column program code at this site, keyed by the issue in which it appeared. This index file, compcol.txt, is also included in 02issue02.zip. The file progress.bas contains the code from the Mar/Apr 2002 Computer Column. It displays a table of ICs for each period and index for a progressive cipher. See the Column text in The Cryptogram for an explanation of the program's theory and use. The file 02issu02.zip contains the other files in this directory. It also contains the index of Computer Column files at this site, indexed by the year in which they appeared. The .zip was created under MS-DOS and its files are in DOS ascii text format. A note for users: Except for the .zip file, the other files in this directory are in Unix text format, which is different from MsDos format. Users of Windows/Dos are advised to download the .zip file and extract its contents using WinZip or some other unzip utility. If you download the text files directly, you will find that .bas basic programs work within QBasic and its editor, but the files may not display correctly in other editors (for example, Notepad). If you download the text files directly, you can avoid problems by converting them to DOS format. The program Unix2Dos was published in the ND00 column and can be downloaded. It was intended for use with word lists, but it will convert other text files to DOS format, too.
